Any menu tag can carry a small icon that renders next to its name on the menu — a 🌋 beside wines from the Mt. Vesuvius area, a pepper on everything spicy, or your own image. Icons are set once per tag and appear everywhere that tag displays: POS-synced menus, manual menus, and composed menus alike.
If you're new to tags themselves, start with Menu Item Tags and Dietary Labels.
The Menu Tags screen #
Go to Steuard → Menu Tags.
![]()
- Every tag Steuard knows about is listed here, with an Icon column previewing what will render.
- Sync tags from connected menus adds an entry for every item tag found on your connected and manual menus — useful for POS tags you've never typed into a manual menu, so you can attach icons to them before they'd otherwise appear here.
- The Icon chooser on the add and edit forms offers three sources.
Choosing an icon #
Pick one source per tag:
- Emoji — paste any emoji (🌋, 🌶️, 🌱). Zero setup, and it scales with the tag text.
- Image — choose a small image from the media library. It renders at tag height; square images look best.
- Font Awesome — type a free solid or regular icon class from fontawesome.com, for example
fa-solid fa-volcanoorfa-regular fa-lemon. A live preview appears next to the field as you type. Steuard bundles the Font Awesome Free styles and loads them only on pages where such an icon actually renders.
Choose None to remove a tag's icon without deleting the tag.
How icons render #
![]()
Icons appear inside the tag pill, before the name, in every menu layout — wherever the Menu post shows tags (Show tags on its Display tab).
Two things worth knowing:
- Icons match tags by name. If you rename a tag here, menus whose items still carry the old name lose the icon until their tags are updated to match.
- Icons are decorative: the tag's visible name remains the label screen readers announce.
